The Dragon King Returned to Reclaim His Stolen Throne

PART 1 — The King Beneath the Ashes

For twenty years, the kingdom of Valdoria believed its Dragon King was dead.

They were wrong.

On the night the blood-red moon rose above the mountains, a lone figure walked through the ruins of the eastern gate. Black armor covered his body, and beneath his torn cloak burned two ancient golden eyes.

His name was Kael Draven, the last heir of the Dragon Throne.

He had been seventeen when his father was murdered, his palace burned, and his crown stolen by Lord Malrec, the king's most trusted general. Kael had vanished into the northern wilderness, hunted by assassins who swore his bloodline would never return.

Now, twenty years later, thunder rolled across the kingdom.

Kael stopped before the ruined gate and removed his hood.

A scar crossed his face. Beneath his skin, faint crimson scales shimmered like embers.

“Tell Malrec,” he whispered to the guards watching from the walls, “that the dragon he buried has awakened.”

Then the clouds split apart.

A colossal red dragon descended from the storm, its wings blotting out the moon.

Kael looked up.

“I have come for my throne.”

PART 2 — The Crown of Fire and Betrayal

The guards on the eastern wall froze.

None had ever seen a dragon that close.

The creature's scales glowed like molten iron, and every beat of its wings sent clouds of ash swirling through the ruined streets. Its eyes burned with the same golden light as the man standing beneath it.

One guard finally raised his spear.

“Sound the alarm!”

The bell tower erupted with thunderous bells.

Kael did not move.

He simply looked toward the distant capital, where the black towers of Valdoria rose beneath the storm.

“Let them know,” he said quietly. “Let every traitor hear it.”

The dragon roared.

The sound shook windows three miles away.

Across the capital, King Malrec woke from his sleep.

He was no longer the young general who had stolen the throne. His hair had turned silver, his face had hardened, and a crown of black iron rested upon his head.

A terrified messenger rushed into the chamber.

“Your Majesty... the eastern gate has fallen.”

Malrec sat upright.

“To whom?”

The messenger swallowed.

“To a man claiming to be the Dragon King.”

Silence filled the chamber.

Then Malrec whispered the name he had spent twenty years trying to forget.

“Kael.”

Behind him stood Princess Elara, his adopted daughter and heir to the stolen kingdom. She had heard everything.

“You told me Kael died,” she said.

Malrec stared at her.

“He should have.”

Elara stepped closer.

“Who was he?”

“A monster.”

“That isn't an answer.”

Malrec's expression darkened.

“He was born with the blood of dragons. His father believed that blood made him chosen by the ancient gods. When the king died, Kael would have inherited everything.”

“So you killed him?”
