The Forest Could Speak—But Only to the Crown Prince

PART 1 — The Whisper Beneath the Trees

Every child in the kingdom of Avelorn knew the warning: never enter the Whispering Forest after sunset.

Travelers claimed the trees moved when no one was watching. Hunters swore the roots could sense fear. And according to the oldest legend, the forest could speak—but only to the rightful heir of the crown.

Crown Prince Elias had always believed it was a bedtime story.

Until the night the forest whispered his name.

He was riding alone beyond the northern wall when the sound reached him.

“Elias.”

His horse stopped so suddenly that Elias nearly fell from the saddle.

He looked around. There was no one on the moonlit road.

Then the trees spoke again.

“Come closer.”

Against every warning he had ever heard, Elias dismounted and walked beneath the ancient branches.

The moment he crossed the first line of trees, the wind vanished.

Silence swallowed the world.

Then hundreds of voices murmured from the darkness.

“The crown is lying.”

Elias froze.

“What crown?” he whispered.

The trees groaned.

“Your father.”

His blood turned cold.

King Aldric was beloved throughout Avelorn. He had ruled for twenty years, defeated invading armies, rebuilt villages, and was preparing to place the royal crown upon Elias’s head at the coming winter ceremony.

“My father is not a liar,” Elias said.

A massive oak beside him cracked open.

Inside its hollow trunk was a stone staircase descending beneath the earth.

“Then ask him,” whispered the forest, “why he buried the true heir.”

Elias stared into the darkness below.

Before he could move, footsteps echoed behind him.

“Prince Elias.”

He turned.

His father’s royal guards stood between him and the road, swords drawn.

The captain raised his blade.

“The king ordered us to bring you home.”

Elias looked back at the staircase.

The forest whispered one final warning.

“Do not let them take you to the castle.”

PART 2 — The Heir Beneath the Roots

Elias ran.

He plunged deeper into the forest while arrows struck the trees around him. The branches bent strangely, shielding him from the soldiers as if the entire forest had awakened to protect him.

At last, he reached the staircase.

He descended into darkness.

At the bottom stood a forgotten chamber filled with roots, dust, and the faded symbols of the royal family.

In the center was a young woman chained to a stone throne.

She looked almost exactly like Elias.

“Who are you?” he asked.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your sister.”

Elias staggered backward.

She told him the truth.

Years ago, Queen Elara had given birth to twins. The first child, a girl named Lyra, was born with a silver mark—the ancient sign of the forest’s chosen heir.

King Aldric feared that a daughter blessed by the forest would someday take the throne.

So he hid Lyra beneath the forest and declared Elias the only child.

But there was one thing the king had never understood.

The forest did not choose Lyra because she was born first.

It chose her because she had refused to become cruel.

“Why did you wait all these years?” Elias asked.

Lyra smiled sadly.

“Because the forest told me my brother would eventually hear it.”

Above them, horns thundered.

The king had arrived.

Elias climbed back into the night with Lyra beside him.

King Aldric stood beneath the ancient oak, surrounded by soldiers.

“You should have listened to your father,” h
