The King Locked the Last Dragon Beneath His Castle

PART 1 — The Beast Beneath the Throne

Every night, just before midnight, something beneath the royal castle screamed.

The sound traveled through the stone floors and rattled the silver goblets in the great hall. Servants pretended not to hear it. Soldiers crossed themselves when it came. And King Aldren always gave the same command.

“No one goes below the castle.”

Princess Elara had heard that command all her life.

She had also heard the stories.

Twenty years earlier, the kingdom had nearly been destroyed by a dragon called Vaelor. They said its wings had covered the sun. Its fire had turned entire forests into glass. King Aldren had defeated the creature and chained it beneath the castle.

The kingdom celebrated him as a hero.

But Elara never believed the story.

Because every time her father spoke about the dragon, he looked afraid.

On the night of Elara’s eighteenth birthday, the castle shook violently.

A crack appeared across the marble floor of the throne room.

Then came the scream.

Not the roar of a monster.

A cry of pain.

Elara followed the sound through a hidden passage behind the throne. At the end stood an ancient iron door covered in glowing runes.

Her father’s voice suddenly echoed behind her.

“Elara.”

She turned.

King Aldren stood there with a sword in his hand.

“Open that door,” she whispered.

“No.”

“You said the dragon destroyed thousands.”

“I lied.”

Elara froze.

Her father lowered his sword.

“Vaelor did not attack our kingdom,” he said. “He saved it.”

Another tremor shook the passage.

“Then why is he imprisoned?” Elara asked.

Aldren looked toward the door.

“Because the dragon is the only thing keeping something worse from waking.”

Before Elara could ask another question, the runes on the door went dark.

And from beneath the castle came a deep, ancient voice.

“Aldren... your time is over.”

PART 2 — What the Dragon Was Guarding

The iron door exploded inward.

Elara expected fire.

Instead, she saw chains.

Hundreds of them wrapped around the enormous body of a black-scaled dragon. Vaelor lay inside a cavern beneath the castle, his golden eyes dim with exhaustion.

Behind him stood a colossal stone gate.

Something was pounding against it from the other side.

“The Shadow King,” Aldren whispered.

Elara stared at him.

“You locked Vaelor here to guard that gate?”

“The ancient kings made a bargain with the dragons,” Aldren said. “The dragons guarded the prison. We protected their kind.”

“Then what happened?”

Aldren could barely meet her eyes.

“I broke the bargain.”

Twenty years ago, hunters had found the last dragon. Aldren had been young, ambitious, and terrified of losing his throne. He captured Vaelor instead of honoring the ancient pact.

But the moment the dragon was chained, the prison beneath the castle began to weaken.

“I thought I could control him,” Aldren said. “I was wrong.”

The stone gate cracked.

A black hand pushed through.

Vaelor struggled against his chains.

“Free me,” he growled. “Or your kingdom dies tonight.”

Aldren dropped his sword.

“I cannot.”

Elara stepped forward.

“Then I will.”

Her father grabbed her arm.

“If you break those chains, the dragon may burn the castle.”

Vaelor looked directly at Elara.

“I have waited twenty years for someone to ask me what I wanted.”

Elara touched the nearest chain.

It burned with ancient magic.

She screamed, but did not let go.

One by one, the chains shattered.

Vaelor rose.

His wings unfolded across the cavern like a storm cloud.

The Shadow King broke through the gate.

For one terrible moment, darkness filled the chamber.

Then Vaelor opened his jaws.

Golden fire erupted.

The darkness screamed.

The entire castle shook as dragonfire and shadow collided beneath the kingdom.

When the light finally faded, Vaelor was gone.

So was the ancient darkness.

Only one black scale remained on the stone floor.

King Aldren knelt beside it, weeping.

“Where did he go?” Elara asked.

A distant roar answered from beyond the mountains.

Vaelor was flying toward the horizon.

And for the first time in twenty years, the kingdom heard a dragon’s roar without fear.

That morning, King Aldren opened the castle gates and told his people the truth.

He had not defeated the last dragon.

He had betrayed it.

And Princess Elara became the first ruler of the kingdom to swear that no dragon would ever be chained again.

Years later, travelers still told stories about the black dragon who disappeared into the mountains.

But every winter, when golden light appeared above the distant peaks, Elara would smile.

She knew Vaelor was still watching.

Not as a prisoner.

As a guardian.
