The Knight Drew His Sword to Save the King—Then Discovered It Was Enchanted to Kill Him

PART 1 — The Sword That Chose Its King

Sir Aldren had killed dragons, warlords, and men who wore crowns of iron. But he had never feared his own sword.

That changed on the night the royal blade whispered his name.

For twelve years, Aldren had served King Edric of Valemor. The king had raised him from a stable boy into a knight, given him his first armor, and placed the ancient silver sword Nightfall in his hands after a battlefield victory.

“This blade belongs to the kingdom,” Edric had told him. “And now, so do you.”

Aldren believed those words were a blessing.

He discovered they were a curse during the king’s winter feast.

Hundreds of nobles filled the great hall while snow battered the castle windows. King Edric stood beneath the golden banners, raising his goblet to celebrate twenty years of peace.

Then Nightfall began to tremble.

Aldren looked down. The sword was still inside its scabbard, yet something beneath the leather pulsed with a faint crimson light.

His hand suddenly tightened around the hilt.

He tried to release it.

He couldn't.

Slowly, against his will, Aldren drew the blade.

A gasp swept through the hall.

The sword pointed directly at King Edric.

“Aldren?” the king whispered.

“I can't control it!” Aldren shouted.

His arm began moving forward.

The royal guards drew their weapons, but Aldren saw something even more terrifying in the king's eyes.

Recognition.

Edric wasn't surprised.

He was afraid.

“The prophecy,” the king murmured. “It has finally awakened.”

Before Aldren could ask what he meant, a hooded sorcerer stepped from behind the throne.

“The sword was never forged to defend the king,” the sorcerer said. “It was forged to kill him.”

Suddenly, memories flooded Aldren's mind—his first day holding Nightfall, the strange symbols carved beneath its hilt, and the old blacksmith who had warned him never to ask where the sword came from.

Then Aldren understood.

Someone had chosen him long ago.

Not to become the king's greatest knight.

But to become his executioner.

PART 2 — The King’s Final Secret

Aldren fought with everything he had.

His boots scraped across the marble as the enchanted sword dragged him toward the throne. Every muscle screamed. Every soldier in the hall watched in horror.

“Kill me if you must!” King Edric shouted. “But do not let the sword reach the royal seal!”

Aldren froze.

“What?”

The king tore the golden seal from his robe and threw it across the floor.

The moment it struck the marble, Nightfall stopped moving.

Aldren stared at the blade.

The crimson glow vanished.

“It isn't enchanted to kill me,” Edric said quietly. “It is enchanted to kill whoever carries the royal blood while holding the seal.”

The hooded sorcerer suddenly laughed.

“Too late.”

He pulled back his hood.

He was Prince Caelan—the king's only son.

Aldren's heart sank.

Caelan had disappeared fifteen years earlier after supposedly being killed by invading armies. But he had survived, studied forbidden magic, and spent years manipulating the kingdom from the shadows.

“You stole the sword from my father's vault,” Caelan said. “You placed it in Aldren's hands. You made him your perfect weapon.”

King Edric looked at his son with tears in his eyes.

“I thought you were dead.”

“You should have mourned me,” Caelan replied. “Instead, you built a kingdom on my grave.”

Caelan seized the royal seal and pressed it against his palm.

Nightfall erupted with crimson fire.

Aldren's body jerked forward.

The sword was no longer aimed at the king.

It turned toward Caelan.

Caelan's smile disappeared.

“No…”

Aldren suddenly understood the enchantment's true design. The sword wasn't bound to a king. It was bound to the royal bloodline—and it recognized the person whose heart had become the kingdom's greatest threat.

Caelan ran.

Aldren followed.

With one final movement, Nightfall struck the royal seal from Caelan's hand and shattered it against the throne.

The enchantment broke.

Silence filled the hall.

King Edric approached Aldren and placed a trembling hand upon his shoulder.

“You saved me.”

Aldren looked at the ruined sword.

“No, Your Majesty,” he said. “The sword saved us both.”

Years later, Nightfall was melted down and buried beneath the castle.

But Aldren never forgot its final lesson: sometimes the weapon you fear is not the weapon meant to destroy you.

Sometimes, it is the only thing standing between a kingdom and the person who believes the throne belongs to him.
