PART 1 — The Dragon Beneath the Mountain
On the night the moon turned black, every bell in the kingdom of Eldrath began ringing at once.
Princess Elara ran to the eastern tower and saw something impossible beyond the walls: a dragon rising from the mountains.
He was enormous, scarred, and older than the kingdom itself. Silver scales covered his body, while blue fire burned between his ribs like a second heart. Yet he did not attack.
He flew straight toward the capital.
“Guards!” Elara shouted. “Light the beacons!”
Before the soldiers could move, the dragon landed outside the royal gates. His claws cracked the stone. His golden eyes fixed on Elara.
Then he spoke.
“Princess… your king has only seven nights left.”
Elara froze. Dragons had been silent for five hundred years.
“What do you mean?”
The dragon lowered his ancient head.
“The magic beneath your throne is waking.”
A tremor shook the city. Deep beneath the palace, something answered with a roar.
Elara remembered the forbidden legend her father had forbidden her to read: a magic so powerful it could rewrite life, death, and memory itself.
“Why are you here?” she whispered.
The dragon opened his mouth, revealing flames bright enough to turn night into dawn.
“Because I am the last creature carrying it.”
PART 2 — The Heart That Could Destroy a Kingdom
By sunrise, the dragon had been chained beneath the royal fortress.
His name was Vaelrion.
Three hundred soldiers guarded him. Six royal mages stood behind enchanted shields. King Aldren himself watched from the balcony, his face pale beneath his crown.
“Kill it,” the king ordered.
Elara stepped between him and the dragon.
“He came here to warn us.”
“He came because he wants what lies beneath my throne.”
Vaelrion gave a bitter laugh.
“Your throne is built upon the grave of a lie.”
The king raised his hand.
“Silence.”
But Elara noticed something strange. The dragon's chains were glowing blue.
So were the veins in the king's hand.
That night, Elara secretly returned to the dungeon. She found Vaelrion awake, staring at the ceiling.
“Tell me the truth,” she said.
“The truth will make you hate your family.”
“I already fear what my family has become.”
The dragon lowered his head.
“Long ago, Eldrath was dying. Crops failed. Rivers vanished. Children were born without souls. Your ancestors discovered the Heart of Aether, an ancient force buried beneath the mountains.”
“And they used it.”
“They tried.”
Vaelrion's eyes darkened.
“The magic could grant anything. But every wish demanded a life. Your first king sacrificed thousands to make Eldrath prosperous.”
Elara felt sick.
“The forbidden magic…”
“Was never destroyed.”
He touched his chest with one claw.
“It was sealed inside the last dragon.”
Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the corridor.
Elara turned.
Her father stood in the doorway.
“You should not have learned this.”
“Did you know?” Elara demanded.
King Aldren said nothing.
That silence was answer enough.
Then the palace shook.
A crack split the floor beneath them.
Black light erupted from below.
Across the kingdom, people began screaming.
The Heart of Aether had awakened.
And it was hungry.
The king drew his sword.
“Bring me the dragon's heart.”
Elara stared at him in disbelief.
“You said you wanted to protect Eldrath.”
“I do.”
“By killing him?”
“By finishing what our ancestors began.”
Vaelrion suddenly roared.
The chains exploded.
Every torch in the dungeon went dark.
When the light returned, the dragon was standing behind Elara.
“Princess,” he whispered, “your father is not the true danger.”
Elara looked toward the cracked floor.
Something was climbing through it.
It wore the shape of a man, but its body was made from living darkness.
The king dropped his sword.
“No…”
Vaelrion spread his wings.
“The magic has chosen a master.”
The shadow smiled.
“Not a master.”
Its voice filled the entire palace.
“A king.”
The creature lifted one hand.
The king's crown flew from his head and floated into the darkness.
Then the shadow turned toward Elara.
“You carry the blood of the first king. Give me your life, and Eldrath will live forever.”
Elara stepped backward.
“And if I refuse?”
The shadow looked toward the city.
“Then every soul in your kingdom becomes mine.”
Vaelrion leaned close.
“There is another choice.”
“What choice?”
“Destroy the Heart.”
Elara stared at him.
“You said it was inside you.”
“It is.”
“Then how do we destroy it?”
The dragon's expression softened.
“You must kill me.”
Elara shook her head.
“No.”
“If I die beneath the throne, the forbidden magic dies with me.”
“There has to be another way.”
“There was,” Vaelrion said quietly. “Five hundred years ago. My kind chose to sacrifice themselves so your kingdom could live.”
His eyes met hers.
“I am the last.”
The shadow attacked.
Vaelrion unleashed his fire.
Blue flames collided with black magic, shaking the palace to its foundations. Windows shattered. Towers collapsed. Soldiers fled as living shadows poured through the halls.
Elara seized the fallen royal sword.
She remembered the forbidden book.
There had been one final passage her father had torn away.
A spell that did not destroy magic.
It transferred it.
“Vaelrion!” she screamed. “The magic doesn't need to die with you!”
The dragon turned.
“What are you saying?”
“It can be returned to where it came from.”
They raced beneath the throne room.
At the bottom of the palace lay a cavern filled with golden roots of light. At its center floated the Heart of Aether.
The shadow followed.
“You cannot undo history!” it roared.
Elara raised the sword.
“No.”
She looked at Vaelrion.
“But we can end it.”
Vaelrion opened his jaws.
Elara drove the royal sword into the stone beneath the Heart.
“By the blood of the first king, I return what was stolen.”
Vaelrion screamed.
Blue fire poured from his body into the Heart.
The shadow shrieked as the stolen magic was ripped from its grasp.
Then the cavern exploded with light.
For one terrifying moment, Elara thought Vaelrion was gone.
She found him lying among the broken stones.
His silver scales had turned white.
His wings were still.
“Vaelrion?”
One golden eye opened.
“You were always terrible at following orders.”
Elara laughed through her tears.
“You told me to kill you.”
“I was hoping you would disobey.”
Above them, the kingdom changed.
The black clouds vanished.
The rivers began flowing again, but now without magic. The enchanted towers became ordinary stone. The royal crown cracked in half.
King Aldren entered the cavern.
He looked at the ruined Heart.
Then he removed his crown.
“Eldrath no longer needs a king who inherits a lie,” he said.
He placed the crown beside Vaelrion.
“Let the kingdom remember what it cost to survive.”
Years later, Elara became queen.
She tore down the statues of the first kings and built a monument instead: a dragon with its wings spread over a kneeling child.
Every year, on the night the moon turned black, the people gathered there.
They told their children the truth.
They told them about the forbidden magic.
They told them about the thousands who died for a kingdom that did not deserve their sacrifice.
And they told them about Vaelrion.
The last dragon.
The creature who carried the kingdom's darkest secret in his heart for five hundred years.
Some said he eventually disappeared into the northern mountains.
Others swore they saw silver wings beyond the clouds.
But Queen Elara knew the truth.
On her final night as queen, she climbed the highest tower and heard a familiar voice behind her.
“Still afraid of dragons?”
She turned.
Vaelrion stood beneath the moon, older but alive.
Elara smiled.
“Only the ones who refuse to stay dead.”
The dragon laughed.
Then he opened his wings.
And together, they watched the sun rise over a kingdom that was finally free of magic—and free to choose its own future.
