PART 1 — The Dragon Beneath the Throne
On the night Princess Elara was born, every bell in the kingdom rang backward.
The priests called it an omen. The royal physicians called it impossible. But the old servants whispered the truth: the royal curse had chosen another heir.
For three hundred years, every child born into the House of Valen carried the same curse. Before their twentieth birthday, a black mark appeared over their heart. Then, slowly, their life faded away.
Elara had survived nineteen years without a mark.
Until the night she turned twenty.
She woke screaming as black veins spread across her chest like cracks in glass. The castle torches turned blue. Outside, ravens covered the palace roof, and somewhere beneath the stone floors, something enormous began to breathe.
Her father, King Aldren, locked the palace gates and ordered every priest in the kingdom to search for a cure.
But Elara refused to wait for death.
Following a strange whisper that seemed to come from inside the walls, she descended beneath the throne room, through forgotten tunnels sealed with ancient royal symbols.
At the bottom, she found a cavern.
And inside it was the last dragon.
Its enormous body was chained to the stone. Its silver scales were scarred and burned, and one golden eye opened as Elara approached.
“You finally came,” the dragon whispered.
Elara froze.
“You know me?”
“I know every royal child,” it answered. “I have watched your family die for three centuries.”
The princess stepped closer. “Then you know how to break the curse.”
The dragon lowered its ancient head.
“Yes.”
Hope flashed through Elara.
Then the dragon spoke three terrible words.
“My heart must die.”
PART 2 — The Price of the Dragon's Heart
Elara stared at the creature in disbelief.
“Your heart?”
The dragon nodded. “Long ago, your ancestor King Vaelor made a bargain with my kind. He demanded our fire to protect his kingdom. When we refused, he killed the dragons and forged their hearts into a crown.”
“The crown?” Elara whispered.
“The royal crown carries the curse.”
Suddenly, everything made sense. The crown had never been a symbol of the kingdom's glory. It was the prison of the dragons' stolen magic.
“Then destroy it,” Elara said.
“It cannot be destroyed by human hands.”
The dragon pulled against its chains. Ancient magic shattered the cavern walls.
“But my heart can break the curse.”
Before Elara could answer, footsteps echoed through the tunnel.
King Aldren entered with armed knights.
“Step away from the dragon!” he commanded.
Elara turned. “Father, you knew.”
The king's face collapsed with shame.
“I knew the truth,” he admitted. “Every king learns it before taking the throne. But I could never sacrifice the last dragon. I thought I could protect you by keeping the secret.”
Elara looked at the black veins covering her heart.
“You protected me by letting the curse continue.”
The king lowered his sword.
Then the dragon roared.
Its chains exploded.
Golden fire filled the cavern, but instead of attacking, the dragon pressed its chest against the ancient altar beneath the throne.
“No!” Elara cried.
The dragon smiled.
“A curse born from a stolen heart can only end when a heart is freely given.”
Its scales began turning to light.
Elara reached for it, tears streaming down her face.
“You don't have to do this.”
“I have waited three hundred years,” the dragon whispered. “Not for revenge. For someone from your bloodline to choose mercy.”
With one final breath, the dragon's heart rose from its chest like a burning star.
It entered Elara's body.
The black veins vanished.
Above them, the royal crown shattered.
Across the kingdom, every cursed royal mark disappeared. Ancient statues of slain dragons began glowing beneath the moonlight, and for the first time in centuries, the kingdom heard the sound of dragon wings.
Elara survived.
But the dragon was gone.
Years later, Queen Elara removed the royal crown from the throne room and replaced it with a single silver scale.
She never called herself the greatest ruler the kingdom had known.
She simply made one promise to every child who visited the palace:
“Never build a kingdom on the heart of someone you refuse to understand.”
And whenever the moon was full, a distant dragon's roar could still be heard beyond the mountains.
Some believed it was only thunder.
Elara knew better.
The last dragon had given its heart to break the curse—and perhaps, somewhere beyond the stars, it was still watching over the kingdom it had saved.
