PART 1 — The Guardian’s Forbidden Secret
Princess Elara had been told one rule since the night she was born: never leave the castle without her magical guardian.
For twenty-one years, Kael had obeyed that command.
He could summon walls of silver fire, stop arrows in midair, and speak to the ancient magic buried beneath the kingdom. Whenever assassins came, he appeared before them. Whenever Elara dreamed of monsters, he stood outside her chamber until morning.
To Elara, Kael was more than a guardian.
He was the only person in the kingdom she completely trusted.
Then, on the night before her coronation, she heard him whispering beneath the throne room.
“She must never learn the truth.”
Elara froze behind a stone pillar.
Kael stood beside the ancient royal throne, his hand pressed against a hidden symbol glowing beneath the floor.
Another voice answered from the darkness.
“You promised the princess would never discover what you did to her family.”
Elara's heart stopped.
Her father had died when she was nine. The official story said he had been killed by an invading sorcerer.
But Kael had always told her the same thing: “Your father died protecting you.”
Now she wondered if that had been another lie.
She waited until Kael left, then stepped into the throne room.
The symbol beneath the throne was still glowing.
When Elara touched it, the entire castle shook.
A hidden door opened beneath the throne.
Inside was a small chamber filled with hundreds of silver mirrors.
Every mirror showed the same night from twelve years earlier.
Elara saw her father standing in the courtyard.
Kael stood opposite him.
They were arguing.
Then her father raised his sword.
Kael whispered a spell.
Her father collapsed.
Elara covered her mouth to stop herself from screaming.
Kael had not failed to save her father.
He had killed him.
PART 2 — The Truth Behind the Lie
“You shouldn't have seen that.”
Kael's voice came from behind her.
Elara turned, tears burning in her eyes.
“You killed my father.”
Kael said nothing.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
“Why?” Elara demanded. “Was protecting me just another lie?”
Kael slowly lowered his head.
“Everything I told you was a lie,” he said. “Except one thing.”
Elara's hand moved toward the dagger at her waist.
“And what was that?”
“I did protect you.”
Suddenly, every mirror shattered.
A black shadow poured from the broken glass and formed the shape of a woman wearing a crown made of bone.
Elara recognized her immediately.
“The sorcerer from the invasion…”
Kael stepped between them.
“She was never an enemy army,” he said. “She was the ancient queen who ruled this kingdom before your bloodline.”
The queen smiled.
“Your father discovered the truth. He wanted to break the spell that kept me imprisoned beneath the castle.”
Elara stared at Kael.
“So you killed him to keep her imprisoned?”
“Yes.”
“And you lied to me for twelve years?”
“Because if you knew the truth, she could enter your mind through your royal blood.”
The queen laughed.
“And now she knows.”
The chamber exploded with darkness.
Elara fell to the floor as the queen reached for her.
Kael screamed her name and unleashed every spell he had.
The guardian's magic burned through the chamber, but the queen was too powerful.
Then Elara noticed the throne symbol glowing on her palm.
Her father had left one final spell inside the royal bloodline.
She understood.
Kael had never been protecting her from the kingdom.
He had been protecting the kingdom from what lived inside her.
Elara stood.
“You should have trusted me.”
Kael looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“I was afraid you would hate me.”
“I do.”
She raised her hand.
“But I believe you.”
Golden light erupted from her body.
The ancient queen screamed as the spell dragged her back into the mirrors.
When silence finally returned, Kael collapsed to his knees.
Elara walked toward him.
She could have killed him.
Instead, she took the guardian's silver cloak from his shoulders.
“You lied to me for twelve years,” she whispered. “You don't get to be my guardian anymore.”
Kael looked up.
“Then what am I?”
Elara turned toward the throne.
“Tomorrow, I become queen. And you will stand before me and tell me every truth you have left.”
For the first time in twenty-one years, Kael smiled.
Not because he had been forgiven.
But because the princess he had protected was finally strong enough to protect herself.
And beneath the castle, behind the shattered mirrors, something ancient whispered her name.
The queen was not dead.
She was waiting.
