Part 1
The cathedral bells had already begun to ring when Queen Elyra raised her hand and spoke five words that froze an entire kingdom.
"Stop this wedding. Right now."
A thousand guests fell silent.
The royal orchestra stopped in the middle of a triumphant note.
The groom slowly turned.
The bride's smile vanished.
No one had ever seen Queen Elyra hesitate in battle, bow before an enemy, or break a promise.
Yet today, with every noble family gathered beneath the Crystal Dome, she had just shattered the most important ceremony in generations.
No explanation.
No warning.
Only silence.
The Kingdom of Asterwyn had known peace for nearly thirty years.
Its floating castles glittered above silver forests. Rivers carried enchanted light instead of ordinary water. Dragons slept peacefully beneath sacred mountains after centuries of war.
Queen Elyra had protected all of it.
She had ruled since she was only twenty-three, after both her parents died defending the realm from the Shadow King.
People called her the Iron Queen.
Not because she lacked compassion.
Because once she made a decision...
Nothing in the world could change it.
Until today.
Standing before the royal altar was Princess Lyanna.
Only twenty-four.
Kind-hearted.
Brilliant.
Beloved by everyone.
Her marriage to Prince Caelan of the neighboring kingdom would unite two ancient bloodlines and guarantee peace for another hundred years.
Or so everyone believed.
Lyanna stared at her mother.
"Your Majesty..."
Her voice trembled.
"Why?"
Queen Elyra refused to answer.
Instead she looked directly at the High Priest.
"The ceremony is over."
Gasps echoed across the cathedral.
Prince Caelan stepped forward.
His silver ceremonial armor reflected the magical sunlight pouring through crystal windows.
"I deserve an explanation."
"You deserve nothing today," the queen replied.
Her tone carried no anger.
Only pain.
Deep...
Unbearable pain.
The prince frowned.
Every knight in the room instinctively reached toward their swords.
Something was terribly wrong.
Outside the cathedral, rumors spread faster than wildfire.
Some whispered the prince had committed treason.
Others believed war had already begun.
Merchants abandoned their market stalls.
Children cried as church bells continued ringing without purpose.
No one understood what had happened.
Inside the royal palace, Queen Elyra locked herself inside the Hall of Ancestors.
No servants were allowed inside.
Not even Princess Lyanna.
The queen stood before an ancient mirror covered by a crimson cloth.
For twenty-six years...
She had prayed never to uncover it again.
Her hands trembled.
Slowly...
She pulled the cloth away.
The Mirror of Truth awakened.
Its surface rippled like liquid silver.
Instead of reflecting her face...
It showed today's wedding.
Then something impossible happened.
Standing beside Prince Caelan...
A second shadow appeared.
It wore his face.
It smiled.
Its eyes turned completely black.
Queen Elyra closed her eyes.
"It has finally found him."
A single tear rolled down her cheek.
Meanwhile, Princess Lyanna wandered through the palace gardens alone.
Everything she had dreamed about since childhood had disappeared within a heartbeat.
Footsteps approached.
Prince Caelan.
He had changed into simpler clothes.
No guards followed him.
"I only wanted to speak with you."
Lyanna looked away.
"My mother humiliated both of us."
"I don't think that's why she stopped the wedding."
She looked back.
"What do you mean?"
"I've met your mother many times."
He spoke quietly.
"She looked frightened."
Lyanna frowned.
"My mother fears nothing."
"I thought so too."
For several moments neither spoke.
The enchanted roses around them slowly closed as sunset approached.
Finally Caelan whispered,
"Has she ever told you how your father really died?"
Lyanna's heart skipped.
"My father died fighting monsters."
"So you've always been told."
"You know something."
"I know only rumors."
"What rumors?"
Caelan hesitated.
"They say your father wasn't killed by monsters."
"They say..."
Before he could finish—
A black arrow shot through the air.
It struck the tree inches from Lyanna's head.
A second arrow followed.
Royal guards rushed toward them.
Masked assassins emerged from the shadows.
Steel clashed.
Magic exploded across the gardens.
Caelan grabbed Lyanna's hand.
"We have to run!"
They sprinted through marble corridors as explosions echoed behind them.
One assassin broke through a stained-glass window.
Another leaped from the palace roof.
The attackers weren't trying to kill the prince.
Every single blade...
Was aimed only at Lyanna.
She and Caelan finally reached the ancient library.
The heavy stone doors slammed shut.
Outside...
The assassins stopped attacking.
Silence returned.
Too quickly.
Too perfectly.
Caelan slowly stepped backward.
His face had gone pale.
He wasn't looking at the doors.
He was staring behind Lyanna.
She turned.
At the center of the forgotten library...
The ancient royal family portrait hanging above the fireplace had changed.
The smiling king she had known all her life...
Had disappeared from the painting.
In his place stood a stranger.
And beneath the portrait, written in shimmering golden letters that had never existed before, were the words:
THE TRUE KING HAS RETURNED.
Part 2
Lyanna couldn't breathe.
The portrait shimmered again.
The stranger's painted eyes moved.
Then they looked directly at her.
"Leave," whispered a voice that seemed to come from every wall.
Caelan instinctively drew his sword.
The blade glowed blue.
"Stay behind me."
The fireplace suddenly burst into emerald flames.
From within the fire stepped an old woman wearing robes stitched with silver stars.
The royal librarian.
Or rather...
The woman everyone believed had died fifteen years earlier.
"Lady Seraphine?" Lyanna whispered.
The old woman nodded.
"There is no more time for lies."
She touched the portrait.
The stranger vanished.
Her father appeared again.
Then both faces overlapped, flickering like two reflections trapped inside the same mirror.
"The painting remembers every rightful ruler," Seraphine said.
"It reveals only what magic allows."
Lyanna looked from the portrait to Caelan.
"What is happening?"
Seraphine took a deep breath.
"Your father was never killed by monsters."
The room fell silent.
"He discovered that an ancient spirit known as the Hollow Crown could steal identities, replacing rulers without anyone noticing."
Lyanna's knees weakened.
"The Hollow Crown cannot create life."
"It steals it."
"It wears people."
"It waits."
"And every century... it seeks a royal wedding."
Caelan lowered his sword.
"The joining of bloodlines."
Seraphine nodded.
"The ceremony gives it enough power to claim two kingdoms at once."
Lyanna suddenly remembered the strange shadow Queen Elyra had seen beside Caelan.
"My mother knew."
"She has known for years," Seraphine answered.
"She sacrificed her happiness to keep the creature trapped."
Another silence settled over the room.
Then came the first unexpected truth.
"The spirit isn't inside Prince Caelan."
Lyanna blinked.
"What?"
Seraphine slowly turned toward the cathedral.
"It is inside someone much closer."
Before anyone could speak, the palace bells rang wildly.
A guard burst through the library doors.
"Your Majesty!" he cried to Lyanna out of habit.
"The Queen... she's been arrested!"
"What?"
"The Royal Council claims she betrayed the alliance."
Lyanna stared in disbelief.
"Who ordered it?"
The guard swallowed.
"Lord Chancellor Aldren."
Caelan's face darkened.
"He was standing beside my father all morning."
Seraphine whispered,
"Then we're already too late."
They raced toward the throne hall.
Nobles lined both sides of the chamber.
Queen Elyra stood in chains.
Yet she looked strangely calm.
Lord Chancellor Aldren smiled.
"My Queen," he said softly.
"You protected the secret for thirty years."
"But secrets always become stories."
He removed the royal seal from around his neck.
Its golden surface cracked.
Black smoke poured from within.
The entire hall darkened.
His body twisted.
His eyes became endless darkness.
The Hollow Crown had never chosen the prince.
It had hidden inside the kingdom's most trusted adviser for decades.
It had manipulated wars.
Treaties.
Deaths.
Even the wedding itself.
Everything had led to this moment.
The creature stretched out one hand toward Lyanna.
"Accept your destiny."
Instead...
Queen Elyra broke her own chains.
She stepped between her daughter and the creature.
"You wanted the bloodline."
"You'll have mine."
She drew the ancient Crownblade hidden inside her sleeve and drove it into the black smoke.
The palace shook.
The Hollow Crown screamed.
But it laughed as well.
"You cannot destroy me."
"No," Elyra answered.
"But she can."
She looked at Lyanna.
"For years I tried to protect you by hiding the truth."
"I was wrong."
"A queen doesn't protect the future by keeping it blind."
"She prepares it to choose."
Lyanna walked forward.
Not with fear.
With understanding.
She took the Crownblade from her mother.
The sword felt warm.
Almost alive.
She remembered every lesson.
Every sacrifice.
Every unanswered question.
They had all led here.
The creature lunged.
Lyanna didn't attack its body.
She struck the cracked royal seal lying on the floor.
The blade shattered it.
Light erupted through every window.
The black smoke dissolved into countless sparks that rose into the sky before disappearing forever.
Silence returned.
Real silence.
Not the fearful silence of secrets.
The peaceful silence of truth.
Queen Elyra collapsed into her daughter's arms.
"You knew I would hate you today," Lyanna whispered through tears.
"I hoped," Elyra replied weakly, smiling, "that one day... you would understand."
"I do."
Months later, the kingdoms gathered once again beneath the Crystal Dome.
This time there were no hidden spirits.
No lies.
No forced alliances.
Only choice.
When Caelan asked if she still wished to marry him, he did not kneel as a prince.
He stood beside her as an equal.
Lyanna smiled.
"Now... we begin honestly."
The wedding bells rang again.
This time, no one stopped them.
And for the first time in generations, the people of Asterwyn celebrated not because a prophecy had been fulfilled...
But because a family had finally chosen truth over fear.
