Part 1
The bells of Silverhaven began to ring before sunrise.
Not because an enemy had fallen.
Not because a prince had been born.
But because Queen Lysandra—the most admired ruler in three generations—was finally going to marry.
Across the kingdom, people filled the streets with flowers. Children climbed rooftops just to catch a glimpse of the royal procession. Merchants closed their shops willingly. Even the old soldiers, who had survived dragons and civil wars, smiled like young men again.
Everyone believed today would become the happiest day in the kingdom's history.
Everyone...
Except the queen.
Lysandra stood alone inside the Hall of Mirrors while servants adjusted the silver crown resting above her long black hair.
"You look radiant, Your Majesty," whispered her lady-in-waiting.
Lysandra forced a smile.
Radiant.
The word felt strangely hollow.
The mirror reflected a queen wearing white silk embroidered with living moonflowers. Tiny glowing petals drifted around her dress like stars.
She looked every bit the perfect bride.
Yet beneath the silk glove covering her left hand, her fingers trembled.
Because she had dreamed the same nightmare every night for seven days.
In every dream...
She married Prince Caelan.
The guests applauded.
The priests blessed the union.
And before sunset...
The entire kingdom burned.
At first she dismissed it as fear.
Then the dreams began changing.
Each night they revealed another detail.
A burning castle.
A broken crown.
A child crying beside a throne stained with blood.
Last night...
She finally saw the face of the man holding the sword.
It wasn't an enemy.
It was her future husband.
A knock echoed through the chamber.
"Your Majesty."
The voice belonged to Lord Rowan, captain of the royal guard.
"The prince has arrived."
Lysandra inhaled slowly.
"Thank you."
When Rowan stepped inside, his expression carried unusual concern.
"You haven't slept."
"I've ruled a kingdom through three famines. Sleep has never been loyal to me."
"You can still postpone today."
She laughed quietly.
"A queen cannot postpone destiny."
"Maybe destiny can be challenged."
She looked at him.
Rowan had protected her since she was sixteen.
He rarely questioned royal decisions.
Today...
He looked frightened.
"Is there something you're not telling me?" she asked.
His jaw tightened.
"I investigated the prophecy you mentioned."
Her heartbeat quickened.
"And?"
"I found records older than the kingdom itself."
He hesitated.
"They all end the same way."
Lysandra's voice became barely audible.
"Tell me."
"When the Moon Crown unites with the Blood Crown..."
"...the kingdom dies."
Silence swallowed the room.
Prince Caelan descended from a dynasty known as the Blood Crown.
Lysandra carried the Moon Crown.
Their marriage had been celebrated as the union that would end centuries of division.
Instead...
It might destroy everything.
Outside, thousands cheered.
Inside, the queen felt the world collapsing.
The royal procession began anyway.
Silver horses pulled crystal carriages through flower-covered streets.
Musicians played songs that echoed across the mountains.
People cried with joy.
Lysandra waved gently.
Every smile she returned felt like a lie.
She searched the crowd.
Faces blurred together.
Until she noticed someone standing completely still.
An old woman wrapped in gray robes.
Everyone around her celebrated.
She did not.
Their eyes met.
The woman raised one finger...
Then slowly drew it across her own throat.
Before Lysandra could react...
She vanished.
No crowd.
No smoke.
Nothing.
As though she had never existed.
The cathedral doors opened.
Sunlight poured across the marble floor.
Prince Caelan waited beside the High Priest.
He was everything songs promised.
Handsome.
Kind.
Brave.
He smiled when he saw her.
"My queen."
"My prince."
His voice was warm.
"You look worried."
"Wouldn't every bride be?"
He chuckled.
"I promise you'll never regret this day."
Those words pierced deeper than he could imagine.
The ceremony began.
The priest lifted the ancient Crown Scroll.
"We gather under heaven to unite two royal bloodlines into one eternal kingdom..."
The guests stood.
Thousands watched in complete silence.
The sacred fire ignited.
The final vows approached.
Lysandra's pulse became deafening.
Then...
She heard another voice.
Not from the priest.
Not from the crowd.
From inside her own mind.
Look beneath his sleeve.
Her breathing stopped.
She stared at Caelan's left arm.
His ceremonial robe shifted as he reached for her hand.
Just enough.
A black symbol flashed beneath the fabric.
The exact same mark...
She had seen in every nightmare.
Her vision shattered into fragments.
Flames.
Screams.
Dead children.
A collapsing throne.
Caelan wearing a crown soaked in blood.
"No..."
He frowned.
"Lysandra?"
The priest smiled politely.
"Your Majesty?"
The entire kingdom waited.
One sentence.
One promise.
One kiss.
Instead...
Queen Lysandra stepped backward.
Her voice echoed across the cathedral.
"I cannot marry this man."
Gasps exploded through the hall.
The musicians stopped.
The sacred fire flickered violently.
Prince Caelan stared at her as though his heart had been ripped from his chest.
"What are you saying?"
Lysandra's eyes filled with tears.
"I cancel this wedding."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Then the cathedral doors slammed shut on their own.
Every candle went dark.
And from somewhere beneath the palace...
Something ancient began to awaken.
Part 2
The ground shook beneath everyone's feet.
Cracks raced across the marble floor like black lightning.
Guests screamed as stained-glass windows shattered, raining colored shards through the cathedral.
The High Priest fell to his knees.
"It cannot be..."
A deep rumble echoed from below.
"The Seal..."
Lysandra turned sharply.
"What seal?"
Before anyone could answer, a deafening roar burst from beneath the cathedral.
The floor split open.
A column of silver light erupted into the sky.
Hidden beneath the palace for centuries lay an enormous stone gate carved with symbols older than any kingdom.
The gate was opening.
The old woman from the street stepped out of the shadows as though she had been waiting there all along.
"You finally chose correctly," she said.
Guards rushed toward her.
She simply raised her hand.
Every sword froze in midair.
"Who are you?" Rowan demanded.
"I was the first Queen of Silverhaven."
Impossible.
She had died nearly a thousand years ago.
Yet the woman smiled sadly.
"I never truly left."
She faced Lysandra.
"The prophecy everyone remembers is incomplete."
Lysandra whispered, "Then tell me the rest."
"The marriage would not create the darkness."
She looked toward Prince Caelan.
"It would break the prison holding it."
Every face turned toward the prince.
Caelan's expression twisted with confusion.
"I don't understand."
"You were never the monster," the ancient queen replied softly.
"You were born as its key."
The black mark beneath his sleeve began glowing.
Caelan cried out in pain.
Dark veins spread across his arm.
"I've had this mark since birth," he gasped. "My parents said it was a blessing."
"It was a lock."
The stone gate exploded.
From within emerged a creature made entirely of living shadow.
Its eyes burned like dying suns.
Its voice sounded like thousands speaking at once.
"At last..."
People fled in terror.
Soldiers attacked.
Their blades passed straight through the darkness.
The creature laughed.
"Fear feeds me."
Lysandra reached for her sword.
Rowan caught her arm.
"You can't defeat that."
"No."
She looked at Caelan.
"But maybe we can stop it."
Caelan knelt, struggling against the glowing mark.
"It wants me."
The ancient queen nodded.
"The mark was never meant to crown a king."
"It was meant to keep the prison closed."
Lysandra understood.
"If we remove the mark..."
"The creature becomes whole."
"If we leave it..."
"It consumes him forever."
"There must be another way."
"There is."
The ancient queen's eyes filled with sorrow.
"But it demands the greatest sacrifice."
Lysandra already knew.
She removed the Moon Crown.
Its silver light filled the cathedral.
"This crown chose every queen."
The ancient queen nodded.
"It can become the new seal."
"But only if its owner gives up everything."
"My throne?"
"More."
"My magic?"
"Everything."
"Even your name."
Silence.
If she accepted, history would forget her completely.
No statues.
No songs.
No memories.
She would save everyone...
And disappear from the world.
Rowan stepped forward.
"There has to be another choice."
"There isn't."
Caelan looked at her through tears.
"I'm sorry."
She smiled gently.
"This was never your fault."
The creature surged toward them.
Darkness swallowed the cathedral.
Lysandra placed the Moon Crown against the glowing mark on Caelan's arm.
Silver light collided with black fire.
The entire kingdom shook.
She whispered her final command.
"As queen..."
"I choose my people."
Light exploded across the heavens.
The shadow creature screamed.
The ancient gate sealed itself.
The black mark vanished.
When the brilliance faded...
Queen Lysandra was gone.
Only the Moon Crown remained.
Years passed.
Prince Caelan never married.
Instead, he ruled beside a council rather than taking the throne alone.
Every year on the day the wedding never happened, the people gathered at the cathedral.
None of them remembered why.
Only that their hearts felt strangely heavy.
Children often asked why fresh white flowers appeared each morning beside the silent Moon Crown.
No gardener admitted placing them there.
One spring morning, an elderly Rowan stood before the shrine.
His memories were fading.
Even he could no longer remember the face of the queen he had sworn to protect.
But tears still rolled down his cheeks.
He smiled through them.
"Whoever you were..."
"Thank you."
Far above the kingdom, where dawn touched the clouds, a gentle figure watched the land she had saved.
She had lost her name.
She had lost her crown.
She had lost the world.
But the people laughed.
Children played.
The kingdom lived.
And somehow...
That was enough.
