The Sleeping Dragon Awoke When the Princess Entered the Throne Room

PART 1 — The Dragon Beneath the Throne
Every servant in the kingdom knew one rule: never enter the throne room after midnight.
Princess Elara had heard the warning since childhood. Her father, King Aldric, had forbidden everyone from approaching the ancient chamber when the moon stood directly above the castle. He never explained why.
But on the night Elara returned to the capital, her father was dead.
The kingdom waited for its princess to claim the crown, while dark clouds gathered above the towers. Elara walked alone through the silent corridors, carrying the silver key her father had left beneath his pillow.
At midnight, she stood before the throne room doors.
The key turned by itself.
With a deep groan, the doors opened.
Elara stepped inside.
The throne room looked exactly as she remembered it: towering pillars, golden banners, and the ancient throne carved from black stone. Yet something felt wrong.
Then she heard breathing.
Slow.
Deep.
Almost beneath her feet.
Elara froze.
A crack appeared across the marble floor.
Then another.
Suddenly, the entire throne shook.
A thunderous roar exploded through the castle, shattering windows and sending guards running from every corridor.
From beneath the throne emerged two enormous golden eyes.
Stone collapsed as a dragon rose from the darkness.
Its scales were black as midnight, streaked with veins of glowing blue fire. Ancient chains hung from its wings, each link covered in forgotten royal symbols.
Elara could barely breathe.
“You,” the dragon whispered.
Its voice shook dust from the ceiling.
“You finally returned.”
Elara stepped backward. “You know me?”
The dragon lowered its enormous head.
“I knew your mother.”
Before Elara could ask another question, the castle bells began ringing.
Hundreds of soldiers stormed into the chamber, swords raised.
Leading them was Lord Varyn, the king’s most trusted adviser.
“Princess!” he shouted. “Move away from the creature!”
Elara looked at the dragon, then at Varyn.
For the first time, she noticed fear in the lord’s eyes.
Not fear of the dragon.
Fear of what it might tell her.
PART 2 — The Secret Beneath the Crown
“Kill it!” Varyn commanded.
The soldiers charged.
The dragon opened its jaws.
Elara stepped between them.
“Stop!”
The command echoed through the throne room.
The dragon closed its mouth.
So did the soldiers.
Varyn stared at the princess. “Your father ordered this creature imprisoned beneath the throne. It murdered the royal family generations ago.”
The dragon gave a bitter laugh.
“That is the lie your family has told for a thousand years.”
Elara felt the silver key growing warm in her hand.
She looked toward the throne.
“Tell me the truth.”
The dragon's eyes softened.
“Your ancestor, King Caelan, feared my kind. He wanted the power of dragons but could not control it. So he betrayed us. He chained me beneath this castle and stole the heartstone from my kingdom.”
Varyn suddenly drew a dagger.
“Enough!”
He lunged toward Elara.
The dragon moved faster.
One massive claw struck the floor between them, stopping Varyn inches away.
The princess noticed something glowing beneath Varyn's cloak.
A blue crystal.
The same color as the dragon's fire.
“The heartstone,” Elara whispered.
Varyn's face changed.
He had been hiding it for years.
“Without it,” the dragon said, “my people will die. Your father discovered the truth and planned to return it. That is why he was killed.”
Silence filled the throne room.
Elara finally understood.
Her father's death had not been an accident.
She turned toward Varyn.
“You killed my father.”
Varyn raised the crystal and unleashed a blast of blue fire.
The dragon shielded Elara with its wings.
The throne room exploded into light.
When the smoke cleared, Varyn was on his knees, defeated.
Elara took the heartstone and walked toward the dragon.
“Take it home.”
The dragon bowed its ancient head.
“And what will you do, little princess?”
Elara looked at the empty throne.
“Become the queen my father wanted me to be.”
At dawn, the dragon flew beyond the mountains, carrying the stolen heartstone back to its people.
Elara was crowned beneath a sky filled with golden light.
From that day forward, the kingdom told a new story.
They said the dragon had awakened to destroy the throne.
But Elara knew the truth.
It had awakened to save the kingdom from the people sitting upon it.
